Roberts Grocery...
Thanks for stopping by the store! Stay in touch and never miss a post.
My grandparents, Celeste & John C. Roberts' home & grocery sat on the side of the road/hill with just a dirt path between the hillside and their home and an outhouse at the end of the path. I still don't know how that house was attached to the side of that mountain and the house is no longer there, as it burned down. Grandfather was a teacher and grandmother had the grocery in the first room of their narrow house (like a shotgun house of today). There was the store room, a bedroom and a kitchen.
I slept in that bedroom before I was old enough to start school. My family lived in Pikeville until Christmas break, my first year of school. Then we moved to Lexington, KY and only went back to visit or attend a funeral.
Roberts Grocery Store
Folks around Peach Orchard Hill had chickens and other animals. They needed a few staples and that is where Celeste Roberts (my Grandmother) played a part. During those early years most of her sales were in bulk. Maybe a small bag of flour for five cents. Coffee, sugar, corn meal, and flour were her big sellers. Many would run a charge at the store. Celeste
just wrote it down as they put things on charge. Usually, most all paid their debt.
