Roberts Grocery Store

Folks around Peach Orchard Hill had chickens and other animals. They needed a few staples and that is where Celeste Roberts (my Grandmother) played a part. During those early years most of her sales were in bulk. Maybe a small bag of flour for five cents. Coffee, sugar, corn meal, and flour were her big sellers. Many would run a charge at the store. Celeste
just wrote it down as they put things on charge. Usually, most all paid their debt.

Roberts Grocery

Roberts Grocery...

Thanks for stopping by the store!  Stay in touch and never miss a post.

My grandparents, Celeste & John C. Roberts' home & grocery sat on the side of the road/hill with just a dirt path between the hillside and their home and an outhouse at the end of the path.  I still don't know how that house was attached to the side of that mountain and the house is no longer there, as it burned down.  Grandfather was a teacher and grandmother had the grocery in the first room of their narrow house (like a shotgun house of today).  There was the store room, a bedroom and a kitchen.
I slept in that bedroom before I was old enough to start school.  My family lived in Pikeville until Christmas break, my first year of school.  Then we moved to Lexington, KY and only went back to visit or attend a funeral.

Grandmother Celeste Ely Roberts Diaries

            Grandmother Celeste Ely Roberts Diary

                                                                   May 19, 1955

May 19th...Bobby (grandson of Celeste) and another had a wreck yesterday and Bobby is in the hospital.  Jimmy (grandson of Celeste) cleaned out the chicken house.  I must walk more to strengthen my muscles.  Iva (daughter of Celeste)) & Curt came over yesterday.

May 26th...Sent to the whole sale today.  Clifton's (son of Celeste) moving.  Bought a second hand dress.  Got Mr. William to go over my chicken lot.  He fixed it so the chickens wouldn't get out.

June 12th...I've had Tom's (son of Celeste)) children with me for two weeks, and don't think I haven't had a time with them.  I sent Shirley (daughter of Tom) to town ( down Peach Orchard Hill, a long  winding road) with another little girl to get 6 loaves of bred.  I put the money in a draw-string bag so she couldn't lose it without loosing the bag.  She got to the store  with it.  Took it out in her hand, got her a _____ got the bread in it, then the two went wondering over the store like they were going to buy something else.  But low and behold when they decided they would pay for the bred they found themselves empty handed, in there wondering from counter shelf to shelf.  They had lost the dollars.  I whipped Shirley good with a little keen switch.  Thought I'd make her do without bread for a day or two but my heart _____me  I couldn't do it.  The other day I sent her to deliver a quart of milk, the jar was glass.  I told her to be real careful so she wouldn't break it.  She carried it OK til she got to the customers yard, then the same little girl that was with her when she lost the
bread mony  came out with her mother's baby to meet Shirley, as soon as they got close to Shirley , she dropped all hold loose and let it crash on the pavement.  I whipped her for that and made her d without her pop till it amounted to 28 cents which took her three days.
